PAPEFH, JACOB - Death News - an Austrian, age about 32, died mysteriously

in the reservoir, adjacent to the Globe Smelter at East Denver, yesterday.

He was on the night shift since Jan 14. At 5 o'clock he proceeded to

his lodgings at Elyria. The employees usually resort to the reservoir,

where the escape of steam pipe from the engine house enters, and there

wash there hands and faces. It was presumed that Papefh went to the

reservoir and becoming unconscious from apoplexy or heart trouble fell

into the water and drowned. L. C. Harris first noticed that someone may

have drowned. Very little attention was paid. A short time later a little

son of F. L. Heath noticed a peculiar object in the water and reported to

his father. Remains were removed, Dr. F. W. Rowley was to perform an autopsy.

Investigation by Detectives Holland and Ingersoll discovered his footmarks

and not evidence of a scuffle or struggle could be found. Investigation

discovered he was a peaceful and industrious man, with no enemies. He was

in this country a few years and had not mastered English. His brother is

also employed at the smelter and cannot speak English. He believes he

he drowned accidentally. He was about 5 feet 8 inches high, weights about

160 pounds, has dark mustache, and was unmarried. No post mortem or inquest

was held as the detectives feel the death was accidental. See *Papest, J.

PAPESH, JAKE - Death News - see *Papefh, Jacob. Remains were dragged from the

water by Fred Keiper and Charles Pauline, and taken to the boiler room at

the smelter. No money or identification was found on the remains. Officers

are sure it was murder. Nick DeTemple, a Swede who keeps a saloon near by,

identified the scarf and cap as those worn by a carpenter who worked at the

smelter by the name of Walter. He did not know the Swede's name but knew

he was a partner of the murdered man.

PAUS, GEORGE – Death News – at Byers, a young man found near a sheep corral at Bijou,

fifteen miles from Byers. He was employed as a shepherd by R. Sherman of Bijou, and

two weeks ago, April 24, he went out in that raging snow storm to go to a sheep

corral, seven miles from his employer’s ranch. He lost his way in the blinding

blizzard and was frozen to death. His remains were in a decomposed condition, and it

was necessary to bury him in a rough pine coffin, whence he lay, away out in the

open prairie. He had secured employment with Mr. Sherman though the Colorado labor

bureau, on Market Street. Previous to that time he roomed at the Washington House,

15th and Wynkoop. The proprietor was unable to give any information on the man. He

is supposed to have come from the east. Coroner Walley investigated the case.

matters concerning property . She is a young lady of decidedly good-looking

grounds for having the deeds cancelled. Mr. Rhodes claims the property in

payment for services for her long and tedious divorce suit which received a

verdict in her favor. Rocky Mountain News 5/18/1890 Pg 5 Court continues with

testimony from Mr. Rhodes. Mrs. Phillips was married to Ernest Bauman, who later

PIGGOTT, WILLIAM - Died - In Denver, Mar 8, oldest son of Robert and

Elizabeth Piggott, aged 14 years. Funeral today at 2 o'clock from

residence of parents, 2737 Marion Street. Interment Riverside.

Rocky Mountain News 3/9/1890 Pg 3 Death News Article - extensive article

of his death. Died of peritonitis Saturday morning. Son of Robert Piggott

of 2737 Marion St. He had complained of gripping pains in the region of

the abdomen. The normal medicines were ordered but did not ease the pain.

An operation was performed, Doctors were aware that some foreign material

had located in the lower intestines. During the operation they found

hard substances in his intestines. On post-mortem examination, Dr. Hershey

found about twenty grains of common sand or pebbles. The parents instituted

an investigation. While attending Whittier School, it is customary the

larger boys there to do as they please with the smaller ones. A common

trick practiced by them was to place a little fellow against a wall, compel

him to close his eyes, open his mouth and shout "Bah, bah black sheep",

and when the mouth was open a handful of gravel was thrown into it and the

little fellow invariably swallowed a quantity of the substance. The Doctor

noted his daughter reported to him this trick was done almost every day.

Several neighbor children reported seeing Willie go through the performance.

Robert Beggs, principal of the school is to be advised of the practice.

Mr. Piggott has requested further investigation. (Extensive article.)
