OGLESBY, PETER - Death
News Article - a nephew of Governor Oglesby of
Illinois, was accidentally
shot and killed while hunting rabbits. He
was employed at the ranch
of J. C. Knowles. He had shot a rabbit and
went to retrieve it,
laying the gun on the ground. When he picked it
up the trigger caught on
the trigger and the gun discharged. Dr.
Charles Zarger was sent
for, but the wounded man died. Oglesby was
27 years old and a noted
spendthrift. He came to Colorado about one
year ago. He preferred
being in the country, thinking that in that
way he could keep what
little money he would earn as a ranch hand.
Whenever he managed to obtain
a few dollar, however, he would immediately
drive to Denver and lose
the money over a faro table. Coroner Walley will
hold an inquest this
morning at 10 o'clock. Rocky Mountain News 1/21/1890
Pg 3 Local Brevities - Remains
of Oglesby, who accidentally shot himself
will be buried today, no
one having claimed him. It will be remembered
that he was a nephew of ex
Governor Oglesby of Illinois. Rocky Mountain
News 2/8/1890 Pg 2 Oglesby
in Potter's Field - was buried yesterday in
the potter's field. He was
a nephew of ex-Governor Oglesby of Illinois,
a family outcast and
rather wild. On Jan 18 he was accidentally shot
on J. S. Knowles' ranch,
six miles north of Denver, by his gun discharging.
His parents and relatives
were all telegraphed but no answer was received
from them until a niece
who lives in Topeka, Kan., wrote and said she was
sorry Uncle Peter was
dead. She would not forward enough money to bury him
but requested the coroner
to forward at the expense of the deceased her
uncle's trunk. The action
of the family has caused considerable comment.
Coroner Walley held the
remains for twenty-one days at considerable expense.
No cause is set forth by
the relatives for not giving him a decent burial.
